Michael Jackson's 'Breaking News' Debuts Online

The late King of Pop addresses his conflicts with the media in the first release from his upcoming album, Michael.

Throughout his life, Michael Jackson had a rather contentious relationship with the media. The late pop icon's outrageous behavior and appearance never failed to generate the attention and adulation he seemed to crave, but that fascination was always a double-edged sword for the conflicted star, as it also involved tabloid reporters digging into every nook and cranny of his personal life. This subject is one he revisited on "Breaking News," the first single from his upcoming posthumous album, Michael, which is scheduled for a December 14 release.

On Monday morning (November 8), a full stream of the biting, never-before-heard track was posted online.

The first salvo from the singer's 11th CD features a propulsive, robotic beat and layered vocals that have the signature future-funk sound of Jackson's late-period work, with pointed lyrics about the thirst for news about the reclusive icon, who died at age 50 in June 2009 following an overdose of the surgical anesthetic propofol.

The four-minute track begins with snippets of news reports about Jackson's life and death, which reach a crescendo before being cut off by a crash, followed by a thumping, skittering beat and lively strings.

"Everybody wanting a piece of Michael Jackson/ Reporters stalking the moves of Michael Jackson," the King of Pop sings urgently. One of the more jarring aspects of the song is that it appears to mark the first time in his career that Jackson made a first-person reference to himself when discussing his feelings about being hounded by reporters. "Just when you thought he was done/ He comes to give it again," he continues, adding the ominous first-verse kicker, "They want to write my obituary."

MJ then sings in the pre-chorus, "No matter what, you just wanna read it again/ No matter what, you just wanna feel it again." He then asks why it is so strange that he should want to fall in love, referring to himself as "the boogie man" and lamenting the media's desire to see him fall. "You write the words to destroy, like it's a weapon/ You turn your back on love and you can't get it again."

An odd musical shift occurs halfway through the song, as a jarring edit takes place that brings up a brighter rhythm section accented by triumphant jazzy horns and Jackson crooning, "All the news today, they say we're crazy."

The mix of Jackson's sugary and tart vocals, dripping with contempt for the tabloid press, helps cut some of the bitterness of the song, but clearly the singer had something to get off his chest. Mocking his tormentors, he sings, "This is breaking news/ This is breaking news," before ending with the biting line, "You're breaking the news" — both a slap at the tabloids for thinking that his personal life is headline-worthy copy and a judgment on what their reporting is doing to the free press.

This being MJ, there is, of course, some controversy surrounding the tune, courtesy of tabloid site TMZ, which has raised questions about its legitimacy. Last week, TMZ reported that the superstar's children and mother were not convinced that the vocals on "Breaking News" were those of Jackson, but rather that they were possibly sung by an imitator.

According to a Reuters report, a lawyer for Michael's father, Joseph Jackson, also said that the music on the album consists of unfinished tracks that notorious perfectionist MJ would never have wanted released. On Friday, Sony Music reacted to the controversy and said that it had "complete confidence in the results of our extensive research as well as the accounts of those who were in the studio with Michael that the vocals on the new album are his own."

The label has said that "Breaking News" was recorded by Jackson at a friend's house in New Jersey in 2007 and described it as having recently been "brought to completion." Sony has not revealed how much work was done on the tracks for Michael or which producers were involved.

Ke$ha will spend 2011 getting "$leazy" across the U.S. and Canada. Her first North American headlining tour, the Get $leazy Tour, kicks off in Portland on February 15, 2011 and wraps up with a show in Los Angeles on May 6.

The outing will support her upcoming release Cannibal, which drops on November 22. That companion album to her debut Animal has already spawned the huge hit "We R Who We R," which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 last week.

The singer, still celebrating her MTV EMA win for Best New Act, will also release a deluxe edition combining her first two records, Animal + Cannibal, on November 22. Beginning Wednesday (November 10), fans who pre-order Cannibal or the deluxe package from www.keshasparty.com will be able to buy tickets for the tour ahead of the general public, who will be able to snag their seats on November 19.

Ke$ha spent the summer opening for Rihanna, and she has promised to give fans another dose of her glitter-soaked pop on Cannibal.

"This year has been carnivorous and life-changing. I have my rowdy, gorgeous fans to thank for taking me on the ride of a lifetime," she said in a statement. "My only goal with this record is to keep them dancing. The songs on Cannibal were made to inspire people to ignore any hate or judgment and be themselves unapologetically. It's the perfect companion to Animal and I hope you guys like it. And if you don't like it — bite me."

Michael Jackson's Michael Track Listing Reveals Akon, 50 Cent Collabos

Michael Jackson fans are eagerly awaiting the December 14 arrival of his posthumous release, simply called Michael, and on Friday (November 12), the album's official track listing was unveiled. Michael will feature appearances by 50 Cent and Lenny Kravitz, as well as a collaboration with Akon called "Hold My Hand" that's set to debut on Monday (November 15).

"Hold My Hand" will be Michael's lead track. According to an official announcement, Jackson had intended for the song to be the first official release off the album. His label, Sony, and the executors of his estate reportedly have a handwritten note from the singer in which he shares that wish. Another tune, "Breaking News," began streaming on his website this past Monday as a preview for the album.

An early take of "Hold My Hand" was leaked in 2008, but Akon says the version that appears on Michael is the definite one. "The world was not ready to hear 'Hold My Hand' when it leaked a couple years ago. We were devastated about it," Akon explained. "But its time has definitely come; now in its final state, it has become an incredible, beautiful, anthemic song. I'm so proud to have had the chance to work with Michael, one of my all time idols."

In 2007, Akon spoke to MTV News about working with Jackson on music, including "Hold My Hand." "Just to be in the same room [with him], I felt like everything I wanted to achieve in life had already been achieved," Akon said. "That's how incredible that aura [is]. We about to shake the world up, man ... You know how you be with somebody and you can't even explain [the feeling]? I used to always sit and wonder, 'How does somebody sell so many records and dominate a whole business genre to a point where nobody can't be a part of that without associating [with him]?' The way he thinks ... some artists think regional, some think national, I was thinking international, 'til I met him. He thinks planet. It's on another level."

The cover art for Michael was released earlier this month. The painting by Kadir Nelson takes fans on a fantasy ride through the greatest moments of MJ's solo career. MTV News recently decoded the Jackson images and references that make up the album art including several iterations of Jackson ranging from Thriller-era Jackson right through to the singer wearing a crown, an obvious reference to his moniker as the King of Pop.

Here is the complete track list for Michael Jackson's Michael, according to Sony Music Entertainment:

»"Hold My Hand" (Duet with Akon)
»"Hollywood Tonight"
»"Keep Your Head Up"
»"(I Like) The Way You Love Me"
»"Monster" (Featuring 50 Cent)
»"Best of Joy"
»"Breaking News"
»"(I Can't Make It) Another Day" (Featuring Lenny Kravitz)
»"Behind the Mask"
»"Much Too Soon"

On Wednesday, the Recording Industry Association of America handed out their latest round of gold and platinum certifications ... and if your name was Ke$ha or Justin Bieber, well, then it was a very good day for you.

Ke$ha's Animal was certified gold (meaning it passed the 500,000-sales mark) and a spate of her digital singles went multiplatinum, with "Tik Tok" being downloaded more than 5 million times and "Your Love Is My Drug" racking up another 2 million. "Blah Blah Blah" and "Take It Off" both were certified gold, meaning that, all told, she's sold more than 8.5 million downloads to date.

Bieber earned his first-ever multiplatinum award, as the RIAA certified sales of his My World 2.0 album at more than 2 million copies. "Baby," his team-up with Ludacris, also was certified as double platinum.

Wednesday also was a great day to be the Black Eyed Peas, as their massive tune "I Gotta Feeling" was certified 6-times platinum (that's more than 6 million downloads) — making it the RIAA's highest-ever digital-song certification.

Following (somewhat) close behind the Peas were the likes of Katy Perry, B.o.B, Taio Cruz and Rihanna, who had their respective mega singles "California Gurls," "Airplanes," "Break Your Heart" and "Don't Stop the Music" certified as triple platinum. Perry and Rihanna also each picked up a double-platinum certification — for "Teenage Dream" and "Rude Boy," respectively — bringing their total hauls to more than 5 million units sold.

The Bruno Mars track "Just the Way You Are" was certified platinum, giving the crooner his very first solo plaque. B.o.B's "Magic" and former "American Idol" champ Kris Allen's "Live Like We're Dying" also picked up platinum certifications.
